“The Economy Policy Institute reports that approximately 24 percent (almost one-fourth) of all American workers today earn below-poverty incomes ($8.71 an hour or less.) Low-income workers tend to be women and people of color, and their low incomes often result from low hourly wages at contingent, short hours or temporary jobs (usually without benefits.) For low-paid workers, long work hours-if they can get them-are often essential.” (Brandt)
