Adult independence is the term used commonly to refer to the transition to adulthood when young people are no longer wholly dependent on parents (financially, socially or psychologically) but would more usefully be defined in terms of a relation of interdependence. (Brannen)

"The bid for independence by young people is 'culturally specific' and 'an intrinsic part' of adolescence in the west but may disguise interdependence and continuing support of parents to children." (Brannen, Dodd, Oakley, & Storey 1994)
