Family Responsibilities Discrimination (FRD) is workplace discrimination on the basis of an employee's caregiving responsibilities. FRD may arise when a company refuses to hire a new applicant or promote a current employee due to the person's family caregiving responsibilities for a child, an elderly parent, or a spouse. Employees, employers, HR professionals, attorneys, and organizations are all taking notice of the increase in legal cases and policy decisions affecting the ways in which companies manage their employees. This topic page outlines the most recent trends in FRD policy at the local, state and federal levels.
