Extreme Work and Family: Parents Caring for Children with Special Education Needs

The number of children receiving special education services has steadily increased since the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was enacted in 1975.  This law mandates the provision of a free and appropriate public school education for children who have disabilities. In 2007 - 2008, 6.6 million children (13% of public school enrollment) received special education services. I have seen firsthand, as a special education social worker, how this increase has taken its toll on public school resources.
